How to protect your dog from fleas and ticks?

How flea and ticks reaches your pet?

Flea Lifecycle
In pets, flea and ticks infestations are quite common and at the same time can be very expensive and time consuming. But how do your pets get infected in the first place? More than 2,200 kinds of fleas and ticks have been detected till now. We will learn some more as we proceed with the article.

The way your dog gets infested depends on where they move about. If they contact with a stray animal, say a stray dog or cat or an infested neighbor’s dog or cat or to an extent urban wildlife including opossums or raccoons. The female fleas lays their eggs which are rained off in the environment. Those eggs develop into adults and jump into our pets as soon as they come in contact with them.

As for ticks, your dog gets infested with them because they often go out in the open, be it walking through the woods or high grass. These ticks undergoes a process known as questing. This is where they crawl up on grasses as well as low shrubs with approximately 18-24 inches off the ground and wait for their prey. When a dog passes by or brushes against these particular parasites, they dislodge from their hiding place and get into them. Ticks are able to live for more than a year without feeding.
